Different arrangements. Different considerations.
A bank deposit, an e-money balance and a payment collection arrangement are not interchangeable. Their legal structures, regulatory protections and operational capabilities differ. The appropriate arrangement depends on the institution, the service being provided and the client's requirements.
Bank Deposit Accounts
- What it is
- A deposit relationship with a licensed bank, subject to the bank's account terms and jurisdiction.
- Protection
- Any applicable deposit protection depends on the bank, jurisdiction and eligibility of the account holder.
- Points to confirm
- Currency coverage, clearing access, account structure, business eligibility and onboarding requirements.
E-money Accounts
- What it is
- An account or electronic money balance provided by an appropriately authorised e-money issuer. It is not equivalent to a bank deposit.
- Protection
- In the UK, relevant funds are subject to safeguarding requirements rather than FSCS deposit protection. Other jurisdictions may differ.
- Points to confirm
- The regulated issuer, safeguarding arrangements, named IBAN structure, permitted transactions, redemption and settlement capabilities.
Payment & Collection Services
- What it is
- Collection, transfer and payout capabilities offered by banks, payment institutions or e-money providers, sometimes alongside an account arrangement.
- Protection
- Depends on the provider, regulatory permissions and the nature of the service, including whether safeguarding requirements apply.
- Points to confirm
- Which institution holds funds, supported payment rails, settlement arrangements, reconciliation and payout capabilities.
